What a name for an album that totally isn’t in the least bit classical or Austrian. Named after Mozart’s First and Middle names, this is the French band’s forth offering since 2000 with United. I have been tracking the band ever since I heard the song ‘Too Young’ on one of Sofia Coppola’s indie showpieces, ‘Lost in Translation’, and I love how Phoenix has evolved their song-making style whilst staying true to their quirky french indie-pop genre.

However I suspect, Phoenix won’t stay indie for too long now. Already having appeared on SNL last week (with host Seth Rogen), the band is definitely trying to make inroads to the U.S. market, after modest sale numbers on their previous albums. Considering how catchy their songs can get, maybe all it takes is a little more PR and marketing to un-indiefy (if there is such a word) an indie band : Free MP3 download of W.A.P.’s first single, 1901, on the band’s website, twitter, facebook? These days, anyone can be an internet rockstar but you need the goods to back up the boast. Phoenix definitely has.

A follow-up to their 2006 album, It’s Never Been Like That, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix in my opinion, continues in a similar fashion: hooks galore, artfully wounded lyrics, meticulous arrangements. 10 songs of pure head-bopping and catchy quality, guaranteed to bring a smile to your face, be it on your way to work on a Monday morning or getting ready to head out for a party. Due out only on May 26, have a listen to their first single,’Lisztomania’ and the free downloadable mp3, ’1901′,  from their website in the meantime to whet your appetite!
