O is for Orzolek and Y is for Yeah Yeah Yeahs!

Is Karen O to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs what Billy Corgan is to the Pumpkins? I think the answer is yes.

No matter how you try to change the sound, or the song writing angle of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Karen O’s voice is the key to retaining the underlying essence of the band. Looking at the varying success of other bands who have survived over the years, the only ones that are still doing well are the ones who keep refreshing their songs, tweaking them a little, but still enabling them to be recognised by their die-hard fans. Of course, at the same time, winning new ones over. Radiohead is a fine example.

Back with their third studio album, the NY trio have decided to swap their amps for synthesizers, angst for pop. Thankfully, they haven’t gone all totally indie-disco-nu-rave on us, but ‘It’s Blitz‘ sounds like an art punk record given a slightly more upbeat, dance-y facelift (Art Punk as a genre was derived from noise rock and no wave bands such as Sonic Youth).

Definitely more accessible to a wider audience now, songs like ‘Soft Shock’, ‘Heads will Roll’ and ‘Zero’ feature that new synth-driven sound. “Less rough round the edges, more engineered and accomplished,” were my first thoughts on the virgin listen. For those who love the raw-ness of ‘Show Your Bones‘, ‘Dull Life’ and ‘Shame and Fortune’ are the tracks to listen to.

Give a listen to ‘Hysteric’, my recommended track for the album. A mid-tempo, mellow track that reminds me so much of ‘Turn Into’ (minus the high hats). Late into the song, about 2.45, you will hear some trumpet-section work resembling TV on the Radio’s - evidence of David Sitek slick production work on the record. A little something for that stay-in rainy day, perhaps?

Pics from Poptart at FASH - Sat 11 Apr 09

Wow. I’ve spent a whole week having butterflies in my stomach and having nerves about the Poptart party at Fash.

All them nerves scurried away as soon as the familiar faces appeared and the dancefloor started getting kerrazy. Here’re the pics! Now i can’t wait for the next one!

wolfgang amadeus phoenix?

What a name for an album that totally isn’t in the least bit classical or Austrian. Named after Mozart’s First and Middle names, this is the French band’s forth offering since 2000 with United. I have been tracking the band ever since I heard the song ‘Too Young’ on one of Sofia Coppola’s indie showpieces, ‘Lost in Translation’, and I love how Phoenix has evolved their song-making style whilst staying true to their quirky french indie-pop genre.

However I suspect, Phoenix won’t stay indie for too long now. Already having appeared on SNL last week (with host Seth Rogen), the band is definitely trying to make inroads to the U.S. market, after modest sale numbers on their previous albums. Considering how catchy their songs can get, maybe all it takes is a little more PR and marketing to un-indiefy (if there is such a word) an indie band : Free MP3 download of W.A.P.’s first single, 1901, on the band’s website, twitter, facebook? These days, anyone can be an internet rockstar but you need the goods to back up the boast. Phoenix definitely has.

A follow-up to their 2006 album, It’s Never Been Like That, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix in my opinion, continues in a similar fashion: hooks galore, artfully wounded lyrics, meticulous arrangements. 10 songs of pure head-bopping and catchy quality, guaranteed to bring a smile to your face, be it on your way to work on a Monday morning or getting ready to head out for a party. Due out only on May 26, have a listen to their first single,’Lisztomania’ and the free downloadable mp3, ‘1901′,  from their website in the meantime to whet your appetite!
